As a Core Thermal Hydraulics Engineer in Lynchburg, VA (remote work will also be considered), you will be part of the proven team in the Fuel Business Unit. Your work will include:
  • Performing thermal hydraulic and safety analyses in support of core design and licensing Framatome fuel for light water reactors
  • Use of sub-channel codes for transient analysis
  • Interfacing with Framatome European counterparts to support light water reactor projects
  • Support interfacing with regulatory authorities to obtain regulatory approval of Framatome core design and methods
  • Performing core reload design and licensing, assess proposed changes in fuel designs or operating strategies, evaluate changes in analytical methods, and support plant operational occurrences that influence core performance and require evaluation.

  • Formally document and maintain records of self-determined export classifications and use of license exemptions.
Personnel security: 10%
  • Specify or develop and implement automated tools for the screening of research project personnel and external recipients to determine federal export control status.
  • Review H-1B and other foreign national beneficiary information as it relates to deemed export and licensing needs.
  • Work with other campus units as needed to acquire and review associated agreements and technology/data or software associated with foreign national activity at the University.
  • Review and approve deemed export control attestations on behalf of the University.
  • Conduct Restricted Party Screening including individual associations with debarred parties.
Security education and awareness: 5%
  • Develop and deliver export control and security education and awareness to the broad University community: administrative staff, including purchasing, shipping, surplus, travel, environmental health and safety, and Global Operations Support; and research faculty and staff, colleges, departments, principal investigators, and students.
  • Conduct and manage initial and refresher security education and awareness.
  • Develop content and delivery methods; deliver security education and awareness.
  • On behalf of the University: verify employee export control awareness; accept employee acknowledgements of export control responsibilities.
Compliance: 5%
  • For the broad University, monitor compliance of University policies, standards, guidelines and procedures with Federal statutes, policy and guidance. Recommend revisions to University policies; develop and implement revisions to University standards, guidelines and procedures.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Cybersecurity, Science, or Technical field and six years experience in export-controlled security; OR equivalent combination of education and work experience.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Export-controlled security experience must include experience with Federal export control processes and procedures related to the Export Administration Regulations and the International Traffic in Arms Regulations.

  • You​'ll​ have a background in hands-on technical development, with at least 18 months of industry experience in a data engineering role or equivalent, and preferably some software industry experience.
  • Proficiency in Scala, Spark, Java, Python, or a programming language associated with data engineering. Our primary language is Scala, but don't worry if that's not currently your strongest language​.​ ​W​e believe that strong engineering principles are universal and transferable.
  • ​​​An understanding of how to build and deploy production level data processing batch systems​.​
  • Experience with a variety of modern development tooling (e.g. Git, Gradle, Nexus) and technologies supporting automation and DevOps (e.g. Jenkins, Docker, Bash scripting). You​'ll​ be familiar with developing within a version-controlled process that regularly makes use of these tools and technologies.
  • A strong technical communication ​ability​ with demonstrable experience of working in rapidly changing client environments.
