Responsibilities:The Loss Reserves – Research & Development team within P&C Analytics is looking to hire a business data analyst. This is an excellent opportunity for a candidate with a background and/or interest in P&C loss reserving who is passionate about data-driven insights and supporting key business decisions. This role combines the need for in-depth business knowledge with a high capacity for analyzing data to provide actionable analysis to support decision-making. The key work efforts will include:

  • Forecasting a variety of expected future claim results and providing insights to support strategic decision making.
  • Using business analytics software to uncover trends, relationships, and insights within the data.
  • Leveraging business knowledge to provide context and proactively share findings.
  • Using historical results, business knowledge, and actuarial or statistical techniques to develop scenarios of potential outcomes to support decision making.
  • Performing quick analysis to answer business questions in a fast-paced environment.
  • Effectively analyzing data, creating appropriate visualizations, and communicating results of analyses to various levels of management with cohesive, understandable, and appropriate message points, summaries, reports, and presentations.
  • Collaborating with key business partners to understand and communicate trends.
  • Serving as a trusted advisor and strategic thought partner to Executive leadership, collaborating broadly with others across State Farm to enable execution of key enterprise priorities and contributing to strategic, high-impact work.

Qualifications:Required skills:

  • A minimum of 5 years relevant work experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business Analytics, Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Finance or a related field
  • Programming experience such as SQL, SAS, R, Python, etc.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills
  • Qualified candidates will have intellectual curiosity and the technical aptitude to utilize financial, statistical and other types of data to analyze business problems, draw conclusions and articulate recommendations
  • Strong critical thinking and analytical skills
  • Demonstrated learning agility to quickly learn both new technical skills and business acumen with immediate application of skills
  • Strong problem-solving and resourcefulness competencies
  • Demonstrated teamwork and communication competencies

Additional desired skills:

  • Experience in a relevant actuarial role, preferably in reserving or pricing. Prior experience using basic actuarial techniques and knowledge of insurance operations is strongly preferred (active enrollment in actuarial exams or actuarial credentials is not required nor expected, the role does not provide exam support***)
  • Experience with AWS Cloud Platform and associated tools/services such as Redshift, DBeaver, Sagemaker, Starburst, etc.
  • BI Tooling experience such as Power BI, Qlik Sense, QuickSight, etc.

  • Potential starting salary range: $80,000 – $120,000
  • Starting salary will be based on skills, background, and experience
  • High end of the range limited to applicants with significant relevant experience
  • Potential yearly incentive pay up to 15% of base salary
